Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function and promote various health benefits. This therapy involves exposing the skin or targeted areas of the body to these wavelengths of light, which penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the cells.

The wavelengths used in red light therapy typically range from 630 nanometers (nm) to 850 nm. These wavelengths have been found to penetrate the skin deeply enough to reach the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cells, where they can enhance cellular energy production.

Red light therapy works through several mechanisms:

1. Mitochondrial Stimulation: Red and near-infrared light photons are absorbed by the mitochondria, leading to an increase in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cells. This boost in cellular energy helps improve various cellular functions and promotes overall cellular health and regeneration.
2. Stimulation of Cellular Processes: Red light therapy can stimulate various cellular processes, including collagen production, DNA repair, and the release of growth factors. These processes contribute to skin rejuvenation, wound healing, and tissue repair.
3.Reduction of Inflammation: Red light therapy has anti-inflammatory effects, helping to reduce inflammation in the body. This can be beneficial for conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, and muscle soreness.
4.Improved Blood Circulation: Red light therapy can enhance blood circulation by promoting the formation of new capillaries (angiogenesis) and improving the flow of oxygen-rich blood to tissues. This can aid in the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to cells, promoting healing and recovery.

Red light therapy can be administered using various devices, including LED panels, laser devices, and handheld devices. Treatment sessions typically last from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the specific condition being targeted and the intensity of the light used.

This therapy is considered safe and non-invasive, with minimal side effects reported. It can be used as a standalone treatment or as part of a comprehensive wellness regimen. However, individual responses to red light therapy may vary, and it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment.

Trigger point injections (TPI) are a treatment option for pain management, particularly for individuals experiencing muscle pain and discomfort associated with trigger points. Trigger points are small, tender knots or areas of tight muscle fibers that can cause localized or referred pain.

During a trigger point injection procedure, a healthcare provider typically uses a small needle to inject a solution directly into the trigger point. The solution may include anesthetic agents such as lidocaine or bupivacaine, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, or other medications that can help relax the muscle and alleviate pain.

The injection itself can serve several purposes:

Pain Relief: The anesthetic component of the injection provides immediate pain relief by numbing the area around the trigger point.

Muscle Relaxation: Medications such as corticosteroids or muscle relaxants can help reduce inflammation and relax the tight muscle fibers associated with the trigger point.

Improved Function: By reducing pain and relaxing the affected muscle, trigger point injections can improve range of motion and functional abilities in the affected area.

Trigger point injections are often performed as an outpatient procedure in a healthcare provider's office or clinic. The procedure is relatively quick and may be repeated as needed, depending on the individual's response to treatment and the severity of their symptoms.

While trigger point injections can provide effective pain relief for many individuals, they are usually part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include physical therapy, stretching exercises, posture correction, and other modalities to address the underlying causes of trigger point formation and prevent recurrence.

Hi, I’m Dr. Joseph Caprioli,

I graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2011 with a Doctorate In Physical Therapy and started CAP PT in 2014 with the vision of providing high quality physical therapy services focusing on Manual Therapy intervention. Human anatomy and manual therapy are my passions, and they led me to get my Mastery Certification in Manual Therapy (MCMT) in 2013.

Sports have also been a tremendous passion of mine and it gives me great pleasure to enhance the mobility of athletes and further their careers. Unlike most physical therapy facilities that pack out gyms giving you little to no attention, at C.A.P. PT we keep the patient to therapist ratio very low so YOU are the main focus during each visit.

From elderly patients to professional athletes I provide the same high quality service for all.

As a Certified Manual Physical Therapist I believe that your body will heal itself when provided with full joint mobility and appropriate functional movement patterns.

I do not believe in passive Physical Therapy treatment. Manual therapy and movement based treatment techniques yield greater results in pain relief and restoring function.
